Teach them to your own daughter, when she comes.

I felt embarrassed for the author.History has no mercy. These extremes in the protagonist came off as a Mary Sue, and I disliked that character and the writing about her throughout. I believed the fantasy elements of witchcraft more than these trite and ridiculous depictions they seemed more like what you'd read in a 1970s harlequin novel, not something contemporary. Also, the protagonist's love interest was always into her even when she was abusive towards him and downright annoying as heck. It was tiresome that the protagonist was always described as the most beautiful woman ever alive-so cheesy. I found these errors distracting, and they also gave the books the air of being really long, complex fan fiction.

I suspect they are self-published as the quality of the print was quite poor, and there were cringeworthy typos and wrong word mistakes (especially in Book 3) that a professional editing job wouldn't have let slip by. However, there are issues with the books. The supporting characters like Miss Poni, Ame, and Diana, as well as the ghost, were what made the story tolerable.

Eventually, I got into the plot events and the mysteries and wanted to see them through, which is the only reason I kept reading. I bought the whole series to read on a long trip. Will they find the strength to create their own future, or will they succumb to a cycle of violence that reverberates through the centuries? The first volume in a multigenerational saga with roots in the witch trials of the 1600s, The Wicked Garden explores the role of mythic resonance and familial inheritance in our lives, and asks if it's possible for the present to heal the past. As Gretchel and Eli stumble towards each other, forces-human and otherwise-rally to keep them apart. He's spent the seventeen years since she left him building the semblance of a life, but a chance encounter unsettles him from this comfortably numb existence, stirs memories he's tried to bury, and compels him to seek out his lost love. Eli Stewart has never gotten over Gretchel. It's just that the dream she's living is not her own, and a nightmare festers beneath all the luxury. As far as her neighbors are concerned, she's living the dream. Gretchel Shea is a beautiful woman with a lovely family, a gorgeous house, and a country-club membership.
